hair today, gone tomorrow

Bad hair days are the norm for me. Because of health issues and medications added to heredity, my hair became baby fine and began thinning in my forties. My first step was to dye it to try to thicken the hair shaft (I went red which was fun but not the best look for me). Finally I returned to being a blond and went short-short as I was told that's the best style for women with thinning hair. It was a good move. It works most of the time — but boy, does it ever take effort.

My mom has worn a wig since she was younger than I am now, but my claustrophobia kicks in when I try to wear a wig. And they itch! Doesn't the itch drive other people nuts the way it does me? I think I'll take up wearing hats instead. Maybe I'll get really crazy with them. I'm a writer, after all. I can be eccentric if I choose. People almost expect it, right?

My daughter sent me an email full of adorable baby photos, and when I came to this one (below on left), I burst out laughing. It's me! It's totally my hair! LOL! Okay. I give up. I am definitely entering my second childhood.

Robin, I have always thought your haircut so adorable. If my mom hadn't kept my sister and me in barbershop pixies when we were little, i might get brave enough to go short short. My mom just did and I love it on her. My mom tried wigs when she went through chemo several years ago. We'd be riding in the car and she'd whip it off and toss it in the backseat and people would be staring but she didn't care - the claustrophobia thing got to her too.

Too funny Robin! I appreciate your attitude and that you can laugh!

I never even thought about the claustrophobia with a wig, but it would get me, I'm sure. Things around my neck bother me, and I'm not too good with hats, either. But you could find a nice loose hat that wouldn't feel eeeky.

My mama wore a wig briefly around 1970 when other chicks were doing it. I wish she would wear one again!!! Major bed-head going on, and she can't comb it because of her disability. We are trying to get her to cut off that perm and go short!! I think she'd look really cute.

Right now, because of me defaulting to cluelessness, my hair is the longest it's been in 35 years. It doesn't look good. It's too thin. But I've collected my pics for the beautician, and it's going away. I'll feel better with it gone!!

BTW, my youngest had hair JUST like that baby pic!! Fluff.

You were adorable then and still are now!

Robin B., that baby isn't me. (I think that's what you thought.) His photo was in an email I got. But his hair reminded me of my hair. And he makes me smile every time I look at him.

Robin, I always loved your hair. In fact, I hope you don't mind, but I have taken your photo with me to demonstrate how I wanted mine cut. It is a little longer now because I don't go often enough, but now that I've been reminded I'll have to print it out again and get me to a shop. :-) Short hair is so easy to keep up.

Sandie, I don't mind at all that you used my photo to show the stylist what you want. That is actually what I did when I got it cut off. But my photo was of Judy Dench after she'd cut off her hair really short.

Oops, sorry, thought it was you as a baby and your daughter came across it!

Either way, thanks for sharing.
