Write Thinking: Idol 10: the 12 girls perform

Pondering last night's show, I have to say it was an impressive first night. I think the judges did a good job of picking some very talented young men for this season. So I'm hopeful I will feel the same at the end of tonight's show. Come on, ladies. I'm looking for some female favorites.

Ta-Tynisa Wilson (Only Girl): Poor beginning, I fear. She sounded off-key a lot of the time, and when she tried to go low, it was very weak. Steven liked it and Jennifer thought she "brought it home." Uh, no. I can give her no better than a 3.0 out of 5.

Naima Adedapo (Summertime): I can't say I liked the arrangement much, but I think she did a nice job with it overall. I don't know that it will hold up as a favorite, though. I'll give her a 3.9.

Kendra Chantelle (Impossible): Not much to the song choice, word-wise or even melody-wise. It's impossible. It's impossible. Etc. I feel like a poor judge because I just plain didn't like the song. Best I can give her is a 3.7.

Rachel Zevita (?): Not a fan of this performance either. Neither were the judges. It wasn't a train wreck. I'll keep her in the middle of the pack with a 2.9.

Karen Rodriguez (Hero): There were moments in this performance that I loved it. A few weak points too. The judges liked it a whole lot more than I did. I'll give her a 4.0.

Lauren Turner (Seven Day Fool): Okay, maybe I should have said that about the boys sooner, because Lauren was the first performance tonight that made me go, Yeah! I wasn't crazy about some of the way she moved on the stage, but she did a great job of singing. She's getting a 4.6 out of 5 from me.

Ashthon Jones (Love Over Me): Great job. I felt she owned the stage. Lots of composure. A 4.4.

Julie Zorrilla (Breakaway): Another one not doing it for me. 'Nough said. A 3.0 at best.

Haley Reinhart (Fallin'): Not crazy about the contortions she does with her face, but I liked her performance. She does have a sexy, smoky voice. I thought the song choice was good for her. I'll give her a 4.0.

Thia Megia (Out Here on My Own): Very understated performance that showcased her beautiful voice. Bravo! And she's only 15. Thia gets my highest score (barely) so far of the night. 4.65 out of 5.

Lauren Alaina (Turn On the Radio): I think I remember Carrie doing a bang-up job of this number, but Lauren does pretty good job with it too. She looks a whole lot older than 16, too. One of the better performances of the night. She gets a 4.5 from me.

Pia Toscano (I'll Stand by You): This young lady looks so classy on the stage, and she gives a very solid performance. She gets a standing O from the judges. First of the season I believe. And Randy just confirms that. I think I'll give her a slight edge over the rest of the pack with a 4.7.
